1. Being rejected from Brakebills begins her downward spiral into learning magic through Hedges.
2. Rejection from the Hedges sends her to try everything, eventually landing her in a psychiatric facility when she realises she can't stop.
3. Release from the facility puts her in a coven of powerful witches trying to contact Our Lady Underground, however, the prayer calling for the Goddess was intercepted by a trickster fox god.
4. At the end of S1, Julia is fully aware of her power AND where it comes from. The memories came forward, forcing her to recall watching the slaughter of every member of her coven, save for one. She remembers every horrible thing done to her in the library, and how exactly she was filled with the essence of a god. Remembering makes it hard for her to use her magic.
